The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday gave the Korangi police more time to thoroughly investigate the murder of a senior lawyer associated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and submit a progress report.
A division bench, headed by Chief Justice Faisal Arab, was hearing a petition seeking probe into the murder of advocate Ali Hasnain Bukhari, who was killed on March 04 outside his residence in the Korangi area. The court has also sought report from the provincial authorities on payment of compensation to the legal heirs of the deceased lawyer.
Earlier, the SHC Chief Justice had converted into constitutional petition a letter addressed to him by the SHC Bar Association through which it requested him to direct the authorities concerned to investigate the incident and arrest culprits behind lawyer's murder.
The SHCBA letter stated that Bukhari was brutally murdered while he was going to the SHC to pursue his cases. "This is a heinous crime and an attempt to undermine the judicial system and the independent legal community," said the letter.
It pleaded to the CJ to take notice of the incident and direct the law enforcers to bring killers to justice. The court was further prayed to direct the Sindh provincial government to pay Rs20 million compensation to legal heirs of the advocate.
