ISLAMABAD: The joint session of the Parliament on Friday unanimously passed a resolution, urging the government to maintain neutrality in the Yemen conflict, so as to be in a better position to play a proactive diplomatic role in ending the crisis. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar moved a 12-point resolution in the joint house of the passage. The house unanimously adopted it.
According to the resolution, "the house desires that the government should initiate steps to move the United Nations (UN) Security Council and the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) to bring about an immediate cease-fire in Yemen.
"The House calls upon the warring factions in Yemen to resolves their differences peacefully through dialogue; supports regional and international efforts for restoration of peace and stability in Yemen;
"The House expresses serious concern on the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in Yemen and its implications for peace and stability of the region and supports all humanitarian initiatives aimed at bringing relief to the people caught in the conflict;
"The resolution appreciates the arrangements made by the Government for the safe and swift evacuation of Pakistanis, and nationals of many other countries from Yemen and expresses its gratitude to the People's Republic of China for its contribution in this regard;
"It apprehends that the crisis in Yemen could plunge the region into turmoil; and underscores the need for continued efforts by the Government of Pakistan to find a peaceful resolution of the crisis, while promoting unity of Muslim Ummah, in co-operation with the leaders of other Muslim countries;
"The House urges the Muslim Ummah and the international community to intensify their efforts to promote peace in Yemen;
The resolution expresses "unequivocal support for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and affirms that in case of any violation of its territorial integrity or any threat to Haramain Sharifain, Pakistan will stand shoulder to shoulder with Saudi Arabia and its people;
"The House expresses deep concern at the increasing threats posed by different terrorist groups and non-state actors to the security and stability of the region and advises the Government of Pakistan to enhance its friendship and co-operation with the GCC and all other regional countries in combating extremism and terrorism;"
Parliament after its joint sitting held from April 6 to 10, 2015, noted "that the war in Yemen is not sectarian in nature but has the potential of turning into a sectarian conflict, which will have critical fallout for the region, including Pakistan."
Earlier, Ayaz Soomro of PPP while speaking on the Yemen situation said that Pakistan should play a diplomatic role to help establish peace in Yemen. He said the issue of Yemen should be resolved through negotiations.
Mohsin Aziz said a political solution should be found for crisis in Yemen.
Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani said the Yemen conflict could have serious implications for the region and the world at large.
Nihal Hashmi appreciated government's overtures for peaceful settlement of the Yemeni crisis. He said that the government should implement the decision of the parliament on the Yemen situation.
Syed Asif Hasnain said responsibility rests with the whole world to play its role for the early resolution of 'a tribal war' in Yemen.
