President of Multan Chamber of Commerce & industry (MCCI), Mian Iqbal Hassan has said that business community has expressed its concern on not achieving the 3.3 percent agriculture growth rate target set for the current fiscal year and it may affect the industrial production in due course of time. Mian Iqbal Hassan urged upon the government to give incentives to the growers of cotton, rice, sugarcane and wheat otherwise they would be forced to give up farming.
He said that farmers could not get fair return of their produce of rice, cotton and sugarcane and they would avoid bringing maximum land under these crops. Consequently there would be an acute shortage of these commodities in the country. Mian Iqbal Hassan said that Govt should procure maximum quantity of agricultural produce to save the farmers from financial losses. He further said that Crop insurance scheme must be introduced properly in the country particularly in South Punjab where flood water devastates huge area.
He said that country is expected to achieve wheat production target fixed for the current financial year despite some partial damage caused by the recent rains. He suggested that Govt should procure wheat through provincial food departments and PASSCO till the supply of wheat by the growers. He further said that Govt should pay proper attention towards the crops of edible oil and pulses.
