The joint investigation team could not leave for Machh jail to record death row convict Saulat Mirza's statement on Monday. According to sources, the Sindh Home Department has sent a letter to the Law Department to grant legal status to investigation team. The team cannot record Saulat Mirza's statement without permission of the law department.
Mirza was sentenced to death in a case pertaining to killing of managing director of then named Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) Shahid Hamid, his driver and guard in 1997.
In a video message from death cell on March 18, Saulat Mirza leveled serious allegations against the leadership of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
He alleged that he killed former KESC Director Shahid Hamid on the directives of Altaf Hussain. On April 2, the Sindh government formed a joint investigation team headed by DIG Traffic Ameer Sheikh to further investigate the matter.
It is pertinent to mention here that President Mamnoon Hussain had extended Mirza's execution by 30 days on a summary forwarded by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
