Criminal activities especially the incidents of murders, kidnapping for ransom and abduction has registered decline during the first quarter of the current calendar year, said a crime analysis report of KP police. During the current quarter, 518 incidents of murder took place as compared to 675 in the corresponding period of the last year showing a decrease of 157 cases.
Similarly, there is decrease of 18 cases in kidnapping for ransom cases and 19 cases in General Abduction during the period under review. During the current year, 16 cases were registered under the head of kidnapping for ransom and 175 cases in general abduction as compared to 34 and 194 cases respectively.
In the Offences against property, there has been a decrease in dacoity, Vehicular theft/Jacking. During the current year, 15 incidents of dacoity have taken place as compared to 21 cases last year. Similarly, 104 cases of Vehicular theft/snatching took place as compared to the 131 in corresponding period of last year showing a decrease of 06 cases in dacoity and 27 cases in vehicular theft.
However, during the current year there has been an increase of 29 cases in theft and 02 cases in extortion.
During the current year, 314 incidents of theft and 60 cases of extortion have been reported as compared to 285 cases of theft and 58 cases of extortion reported last year. Peshawar which is the target of extortionists has shown improvement in incidents of extortion.
During the current year 28 cases of extortion are reported as compared to 35 last year. Presently CTD is handling the cases of extortion also besides dealing with hardcore terrorism. They have arrested a sizeable number of extortionists due to which it is expected that this crime will further be reduced in the incoming months.
The KP Police, in order to discourage the trend of non registration of offences against property, has provided a number of forums to the common people through which they can report and register their cases with ease. Presently, Police Assistance Lines (PAL) and Police Access Service (PAS) are also entertaining all such requests for the registration of theft, robbery and extortion cases.
Besides this Police Access Service (PAS) has also been introduced, where public can send their complaints online, through fax or even through a short message service (SMS).
Moreover, the traffic related accidents both fatal and non fatal, have been decreased. 5023 cases have been reported in the first quarter of this year as compared to 6318 cases reported last year in the corresponding period showing a decrease of 1295 cases.
The KP Police have improved significantly on the proactive policing aspect. Continuous Search and Strike Operations are being conducted under the direct supervision of senior officers.
During these operations, cases are being registered against illegal foreigners and immigrants, landlords who failed to register the information about their tenants with the local police, the management of hotels who fail to adopt necessary measures for the registration of their guests and the management of educational institutes who fail to provide proper security as per the laid guidelines.
3379 cases under Foreign Act have been registered in the first quarter of this year against illegal immigrant's mostly illegal afghan immigrants, 463 cases registered against the management who fail to provide security and relevant information under Sensitive and Vulnerable places ordinance, mostly educational institutes. 1594 cases against landlords who failed to provide information about their tenants, 300 cases against hotel managements, 9012 cases registered under Prohibition under Hadood Ordinance and 5820 cases registered under Arms Ordinance.
