Diversified, divergent and different but tied together by Studio RM a group exhibition of artists at Sanat Gallery, Karachi aimed at paying tribute to their teachers was a good initiative by the gallery and the studio. The exhibition was unique in its concept as while going through the works of the artists a myriad of different elements can be seen in not only work but in thought and opinions. Although alumni of Studio RM the artists show far different ideas and conceptions.
I could not attend the opening day of the exhibition due to some personal engagement and visit the gallery afterwards therefore haven't got the chance to talk to the artists But viewing each artist artworks one by one I realise the depth and understanding of ideas which these artists got from their teachers reflected in their works. The title "Silsila" of the exhibition translated well in the paintings by the artists. These emerging artists converge their learned knowledge and continues learning through practising and interacting with one another. Therefore their "Silsila" of learning keep on going.
These artists in the long pursuit of their careers got enlightened through such projects and such creative activities help them nurture their talent. Using modern and traditional methods and concepts these artists intersected with new and diverse ideas while discussing certain issues with each other.
The education imparted at Studio RM along with their personal skills resulted in many inimitable artworks. The process of creativity and competence emanate in their works. Dreams, reality and inspiration which they gained from their teachers were reflected in the forms, colours and concepts of their artworks. The historical and cultural events created innovations. Their confidence and analytically thoughts and approach in their work and their ideas critically portrayed in a well composed compositions.
The indigenous systems of knowledge and global exposure make their artworks global yet local. The artists include: Dua Abbas, Sana Arjumand, Faisal Asghar, Abid Aslam, Mizna Baluch, Irfan Gul Dahri, Nazia Gull, Irfan Hasan, Donia Kaiser, Ali Kazim, Amra Khan, Saba Khan, Mudassar Manzoor, Rm Naeem, Sadaf Naeem, Naveed Sadiq, Kiran Saleem, Aakif Suri, Adeel Uz Zafar and Muhammad Zeeshan. The Studios RM was established by R M Naeem in 1994 "served as a hub of learning and interaction outside of formal education, while also being a launching-pad, of sorts, for artists in the early days of their practice." And he is succeeded in doing so.
