Expressing serious concerns over airing 'hate speech' last night by some of the private TV channels, the government on Friday issued show cause notices to 14 private TV channels. Altaf Hussain, during his controversial speech had said: "We are called RAW agents every other day. Those who surrendered [before the Indian Army in 1971] are called patriots, while the founders of Pakistan are dubbed as traitors."
Hussain's remarks came hours after SSP Malir Rao Anwar called for a ban on the MQM for its alleged links with the RAW. Anwar was later suspended by the IG Sindh upon directives of Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah. In a written letter to Chairman Pakistan Electronic Regulatory Media Authority (PEMRA), Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting has directed the apex media regulator to take strict action against TV channels that broadcast such material without proper scrutiny and editing.
The letter says despite supporting freedom of media, the government condemns the elements that spread hate in society through derogatory statements containing material that is in no way promoting peace and harmony, which is vital for the country. Seeking action in accordance with Section-27 of the PEMRA Act, the letter said that the action should be taken against TV channels that violate rules and regulations. It added that the particular speech incited hate among the masses. The information minister had earlier said that unwarranted criticism of national security institutions was tantamount to sheltering criminals.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued here, Pervaiz Rashid said law enforcement agencies were playing a pivotal role in eradication of organised crime in Karachi and making efforts towards turning it into a city of lights again. He commended the efforts of the security agencies in countering terrorism. The Minister said the law-enforcement agencies were taking indiscriminate action against criminals without any political consideration. He said all the democratic forces, civil society and the media should support law enforcement agencies in their bid to root out crimes from society.
