The Punjab University Pakistan Study Centre organised a seminar on 'Pakistan-Indian Relations: the European perspective.' University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Warsaw, Poland Professor Doctor Agnieszka Kuszewska was the keynote speaker, with centre Director Professor Dr Massarrat Abid, Dr Ahmad Ejaz and others. In her speech, Dr Kuszewska talked about the significant aspects of the Pakistan-India relations from the European perspective and coined the idea of reconciliation through cultural exchange and people to people contact between the two countries for the lasting peace in the region of South Asia.
Sketching the comparison of the South Asian and Regional Cooperation and the European Union, she said the former was "a paper tiger" since no real cooperation existed between the member countries. "Almost all the member countries of European Union have a high human development index as compared to the SAARC (South Asian and Regional Cooperation) countries which are mired by poverty," she added.
She also drew similarities between the nuclear rivalry and the American-Soviet Cold War and the differences the Eastern and Western Europe, saying the Western block's concerns were economic in nature whereas Eastern Europe's matter revolved around security issues. She then stressed the need for building CBMs to promote peace and pacify the hawkish elements on both sides of the border. A question-answer session was then followed at the end of the talk followed by signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Punjab University and its Polish counterpart after the seminar.
