The newly established Islamabad Bar Council elected on Saturday five members for a term of five years. These five members would elect a vice chairman for the IBC in coming days. The newly elected IBC members are: Qazi Rafiuddin Babar, Shoaib Shaheen, Haroon Rashid, Syed Wajid Ali Gillani and Faiz Jandran.
After establishment of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in 2011, the lawyers were demanding establishment of a bar council for the Islamabad capital territory (ICT) for handling the matters related to the discipline and issuance of legal practice licenses to the Islamabad based lawyers. Earlier, the Islamabad based lawyers were being dealt by the Punjab Bar Council with regard to such matters.
On Saturday, the corridors of district courts were packed with the supporters, friends and associates of those 29 senior lawyers who were contesting for five seats of the IBC. They were distributing the publicity cards of the candidates to the every passerby with a request to cast vote in their support. The candidates were also standing at different intervals along with those canvassers who were well known lawyers. The polling was started at 8 am and continued till 5 pm. 6 polling stations have been formed for 3700 registered voters of the IBC.
These polling officers of these six polling stations were the additional district and sessions judges namely Kamran Basharat Mufti, Wajid Ali, Shahrukh Arjumand, Ata Rabbani, Sikandar Khan and Mohammad Adnan. The district and sessions judge Tanvir Mir was the returning officer for the said election.
