The Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122), while conducting as many as 51,754 rescue operations in the month of April, has rescued up to 54,031 victims of emergencies with average response time of seven minutes. The emergency calls to which Rescue 1122 responded to were: 19,470 road traffic accidents, 24,094 medical emergencies, 1,251 fire incidents, 2,003 crimes, 103 drowning incidents, 79 building collapses, nine explosions and 4,745 miscellaneous operations.
Director General Rescue Punjab Dr Rizwan Naseer has directed all rescue officers to ensure uniform standard of the service and smooth emergency services delivery without discrimination. Sources revealed that the road traffic accidents and fire incidents were increasing day-by-day in Punjab.
Rizwan Naseer said that after saving lives of over 3.2 million emergency victims through effective emergency management system, now we are moving towards promoting safety by community action for Disaster Response Emergencies, training Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) for Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) and implementation of safe community development initiatives so that we can establish socially responsible, healthy, resilient and safer communities in Pakistan.
Keeping in view the current situation of the country, Dr Rizwan directed all the District Emergency Officers (DEOs) to implement "School Safety Programme" in respective districts on priority basis and also get involved community members in community safety initiative. He further said that in order to focus on promoting safety, Rescue 1122 will adopt community centred approach for disaster management through community involvement in hazards identification, vulnerability and capacity assessment and risk reduction measures with community collaboration.
