Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman has said the current government has given top priority to health and education. "The provincial health budget has been significantly enhanced and additional resources provided to accelerate the efforts to achieve promptly the millennium development goal. We are focusing on protecting the health of people through strengthening primary health care and disease preventive programmes," he told to a delegation of party workers on Saturday.
He claimed that 95 percent of discretionary funds were used to treat under-privileged people and for grant aid to the poor. "Priority is being paid to the education and health sectors and the development budget of the current fiscal year is 17 percent more as compared to the previous year. The budget allocated for education is Rs 274 billion, which is 26.25 percent of total expenditures whereas the one allocated for health is Rs 121.80 billon, which is 11.66 percent of total expenditures of the government," he claimed. "With a cost of Rs 4 billion health insurance cards will be issued to provide state-of-the-art healthcare facilities even in private health institutions to poor card holders.
