Today as we commemorate the International Firefighters' Day. We also acknowledge the dedication, heroism and importance of firefighters of our own Country. This Day on one hand reminds us of the horrible effects of fire incidents and on the other highlights the valiant actions of firefighters in saving precious lives.
Mass urbanisation, non observance of basic fire prevention measures, fragile implementation of fire safety codes and resource inadequacy of firefighting apparatus are those challenges which make Pakistan as a highly vulnerable Country to fire hazards. Some of the serious fire accidents of recent past in the Country are a manifestation of this fact. Fire incidents are preventable if correct and timely precautions are undertaken. Installation of fire safety alarms, establishment of fire safety routes, routine fire safety checks and above all awareness are some of the measures which can significantly reduce the losses and minimise the risks. We need to ensure construction of fire safe structures in public and private sectors alongside domestic constructions. Government of Pakistan is committed to prevent these losses. Preparation of National Fire Safety Policy is already in progress and we will pursue its expeditious finalisation. Micro level risk assessment of fire hazards in vulnerable cities of various province is an other aspect which merit attention for Disaster Risk Reduction. I must compliment the determination of our firefighters that they are delivering in resource constraint environment. The Nation salutes our brave firefighters on this important Day.
