Religious scholars (Ulema) must play their role to educate the people about the noble cause of eye donation removing their misconceptions as it can give a new life to a human being. This was said by Senior, Eye Specialist, Dr Muhammad Anwar Khan, SI who is serving at Rawalpindi Eye Donor Organisation (REDO) for the last many years in an interview with APP on Sunday.
He said people have many misconceptions about eye donations and they need to be educated and motivated to become part of this noble cause.
Dr Anwar said many people express their wish to donate their eyes before their death but their siblings do not permit anyone to fulfil this wish which is a wrong thing.
"It is not the full eye which is donated but only cornea which the people do not understand. Apparently donated cornea do not makes any big difference to the eye structure of a dead person", he added.
He has conducted more than one thousand successful cornea operations by replacing it through donated eyes. "I cannot express the feeling which came through giving this precious gift of vision to someone who cannot see."
Dr Anwar said regular check-up is necessary for safety of eyes and people must save themselves from quacks.
Pakistan has best services and equipment regarding eye treatment but it is a matter of great concern that these services do not reach to the deserving and poor people, he lamented.
REDO is an organisation which was established to provide free of cost eye treatment facilities to the poor people. Its aim was not to get any financial benefit but to serve the poor people.
REDO facilitates those doctors who want to serve the poor people by giving them a platform and opportunity, he said.
Dr Muhammad Anwar Khan received Sitara-i-Imtiaz for his valuable contribution and he has been serving in this field for the last 40 years and attached with REDO for the last 24 years.
