A seminar on "Drug Abuse Prevention among Youth" was arranged by Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences Jamshoro in collaboration with Narcotics Control Division, Ministry of Interior & Narcotics Control Islamabad. Addressing a large number of students, Vice Chancellor LUMHS Professor Noshad A Shaikh said that using drugs can disrupt brain function in areas critical to motivation, memory, learning, judgment, and behaviour control. It is not surprising that youth that use alcohol and other drugs often have family and social problems, poor academic performance, health related problems including mental health, he added.
The decision of using drugs by the young generation will influence their health, their grades, their relationships, their job or career, or their freedom. Not to be too dramatic, but these are life and death decisions. The Guest of Honour, Syed Abdul Shamsi, Joint Secretary Narcotics Control Division, Islamabad, said that the Liaquat University is playing a vital role for prevention of drug abuse by holding such public awareness seminars and the students can spread the message regarding the hazards of using drugs to the community. Earlier, Professor Moin Ansari, Chairman Department of Psychiatry LUMHS, Dr Aisha from Narcotics Control Division Islamabad delivered their presentations on the subject.
