The Met Office has warned that the weaker monsoon with much less rains in Sindh may aggravate drought conditions in Thar and Cholistan regions. In monsoon outlook, it forecast weaker monsoon and below normal rains during July-September 2015 in its weather outlook. In Balochistan too, the seasonal rains are expected to fall lower than normal, it said.
"In Sindh and Balochistan, rainfall during the period is expected to remain much less than normal which may aggravate the drought conditions in Thar and Cholistan," it added.
It said that pre-monsoon showers were expected during the second fortnight of June and monsoon would attain its normal rhythm gradually towards the end of July. "In general, 2015 monsoon is expected weaker than normal, therefore less than normal rain is foreseen during June-August," it pointed out. Monsoon rains will mainly concentrate in AJK, Northeast Punjab and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa embedded with extreme precipitation events sometimes exceeding 200 mm per day, it said.
The office said that models were indicating some heavy falls in catchment of Kabul River in Pakistan and Afghanistan due to interaction of westerlies and monsoon currents. "Due to less cloudiness and relatively clearer skies in Gilgit-Baltistan, glacier melt rate will be higher. A careful operation of dams will be required to avoid the synchronous peak flows," the forecaster said.
