Youm-e-Takbeer, the celebration of Pakistan's nuclear explosions in 1998, is being marked today nationwide. Organisations will stage rallies, processions and demonstrations to pay tributes to Dr Abdul Qadir Khan and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. On May 28, 1998, Pakistan joined the prestigious club of seven nuclear powers, by conducting nuclear tests in response to India's own nukes on May 11 and 13 the same year.
PML-N leader Mohammad Pervaiz Malik said the decision to conduct the nuclear tests raised the status of Pakistani nation in the comity of nations. He said the PML-N government decided to conduct nuclear tests in order to make Pakistan's defense impregnable. He said that the entire Pakistani nation was proud of this historic achievement on May 28, 1998.
Malik said that on the occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer, the people will have to resolve that just as Pakistani nation, leadership, armed forces and scientists made efforts to secure the geographical frontiers of Pakistan, every sacrifice will be made for protection of the country and coping with the challenge of terrorism. He further said that May 28 reflects national aspirations and is the day of national solidarity.
