Tariq Ejaz Chaudhary, CEO Engineering Development Board (EDB) called on Inspector General, National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP), Saleem Bhatti on Thursday to discuss Automotive Safety Issues. The CEO of EDB informed the IG that EDB is in the process to adapt WP 29-Regulations which relate to safety and quality of vehicles. Working Party 29 is the forum under United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) working for harmonisation of vehicle regulations.
The Vehicle Fitness Certification System prevailing in the country also came under discussion. EDB suggested that the proposed joint project of EDB and NH&MP on Vehicle Fitness Centers to be established in Federal Capital Area needs to be reconsidered. IG, NH&MP emphasised that the vehicle inspection is the domain of provinces and close co-ordination will be needed for uniformity of inspection system in various provinces. He said vehicle inspection and certification system has been launched in Punjab, the scope of which encompasses the public service vehicles at present. The need for vehicle inspection system in Federal Capital for both; private and public service vehicles was also discussed. CEO EDB admired the existing training programmes launched by NH&MP for drivers, Tariq Ejaz also proposed that scope of training and awareness programmes should also be extended to the universities.-PR
