This refers to Business Recorder editorial 'Karachi needs jobs, improved civic services' carried by it yesterday. The editorial has raised a highly important point by making mention of what businesspeople of Karachi had told Corps Commander of Karachi Lieutenant-General Naveed Mukhtar.
According to it, "the Army Commander was told that the situation has considerably improved but due to poor effectiveness of the police force the incidence of petty street crimes has refused to die down which continues to cast doubts in the minds of critics and this in turn adversely impacts the investment climate of the mega city."
No doubt, street crimes continue to cast a shadow on all efforts of law enforcement agencies towards restoring peace in the metropolis. Even traffic gridlocks provide a golden opportunity to criminal elements to deprive motorists and motorcycle riders of their valuables. Such types of crimes do not take in any other city of this country or anywhere else in the world. Such crimes, therefore, constitute a stigma on governance and raise a legitimate question about the efficacy of the ongoing Karachi operation. The government must analyse the situation with a view to articulating a strategy aimed at effectively addressing this and similar issues.
