A Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) and Station Housing Officer (SHO) have been suspended as a result of the death of a detained party worker of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). The MQM has announced 2-day mourning over the incident. Business remained close in several parts of cities including Karachi. Police personnel had picked up 3 brothers from the area of Baldia Town on June 3 and taken them into custody. One of the suspects, identified as Waseem Aka Abba, has died under custody and his body has been shifted to Jinnah Hospital, Karachi.
Upon hearing the news of the casualty, relatives gathered in a large number outside Jinnah Hospital. Several enraged protestors also blocked the road in front of Jinnah Hospital. A policeman was also allegedly tortured by the protesters, however, he was rescued by fellow policemen. Taking notice of the incident, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Police East Munir Sheikh has suspended SHO Aziz Bhatti in addition to demoting him. Three other personnel have also been taken into custody.
