Amir Jamaat-e-Islami Sirajul Haq has called upon the Election Commission of Pakistan to take measures to address complaints and reservations, wherein solid proofs were available, regarding poll-rigging during May 30 local bodies' elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The masses were not in a position to brave shutter-down, strikes, and sit-ins, he said in clear reference to the strike call given by opposition parties for June 10 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa against alleged rigging in local bodies polls in KP.
Siraj was addressing a consultative meeting here on Sunday. He said that the strikes and protests would bring political instability and uncertainty in the province. The meeting was also attended by JI provincial chief Professor Mohammad Ibrahim, Secretary Political Affair's committee, Bahrullah Khan and others.
JI chief said Election Commission of Pakistan was needed to evolve an effective mechanism for holding free, fair and transparent LB polls. He stated it was manifested that they had not learnt from the past experiences. He said that it was totally wrong to declare entire election null and void.
"Democracy can't be stabilised until masses would have complet trust in electoral process, he added. JI Chief said the KP economy was in tatter due to the so-called war against terrorism, so, the province was not in a position to face further turmoil and disorder due to strikes and protests by opposition parties.
He said protests and agitations were not in the best interest of people of this province. Haq said the re-polling should be conducted in those polling stations wherein complaints and proofs available about mismanagement and rigging during the local body polls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
