Pakistan and Qatar-Gas officials would resume talks on finalising the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) deal in Doha on Tuesday (today). This was confirmed by Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbassi to Business Recorder. He added that the delegation would hold talks but not ink an LNG Sales Purchase Agreement.
The first shipment of LNG reached Port Qasim Authority on March 27, 2015 and so far a total of five LNG ships have arrived, each containing 3,200 Million Cubic Feet (MMCF). The imported commodity is being supplied to private power houses, CNG stations in Punjab and a fertilizer company.
According to officials, the final LNG Sales Purchases Agreement (SPA) is being delayed due to inadequate channel depth at Port Qasim which, as per standards should be 14 meters, and is around 13 meter deep. In addition, the Ministry of Water and Power has been unable to convince Independent Power Plants (IPPs) to open letters of credit for LNG purchase.
