Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on Wednesday visited liver transplant patients at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT). Speaking on the occasion, Director SIUT Professor Adib Rizvi thanked the chief minister for Sindh government's continuous support to the institute.
He said that although the Parliament had passed a law for deceased organ donation, the programme was yet to take pace in the country. "The electronic and print media are continuously trying to educate masses about this noble cause so that the lives of thousands of affected people could be saved," he added.
He said that even the country's Ulema were supporting the program. He also cited the recommendations of a seminar organised by Shaikh Zaid Islamic Centre, University of Karachi. He lauded the efforts of Mufti Muneeb ur Rehman, saying that he had played a vital role in preparing these recommendations. Dr Rizvi asked the government and media to come forward and educate people about organ donations.
Initially the SIUT used to perform liver transplant surgeries in collaboration with Kings College, London. However, due to poor law and order in the country, the programme was affected. Now the institute is continuing the programme in collaboration with Shiraz Transplant Centre. The SIUT staff have got training from international institutions and are capable of conducting liver transplant surgeries in the country.
