Oversight of CPEC projects: National Assembly speaker authorised to constitute parliamentary body
The National Assembly on Wednesday authorised the Speaker to constitute a Parliamentary Committee to oversee the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects. Finance Minister Muhammad Isahq Dar moved a motion in the House seeking to authorise Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to constitute a Parliamentary Committee for oversight of CPEC. The House unanimously adopted the motion.
According to the motion, this House authorises the Speaker National Assembly to appoint a Committee for China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, in consultation with the Chairman Senate and Leaders of the Parliamentary Parties in the House, comprising 21-member from the Parliamentary Parties in proportion to their representation in the National Assembly and the Senate. The Speaker is also authorised to make changes in the composition of the Committee as and when the occasion may arise.
The Committee will perform oversight of CPEC projects to ensure proper implementation, as per the consensus reached at the APC meeting held on 28th May, 2015; The Committee will monitor the implementation of the projects and make recommendations for speedy and timely implementation. The Committee may make suggestions for improvements that may result in cost and time reduction as well as provision of better services to the public.
