The National Commission for Justice and Peace has expressed reservations over 'Punjab Protection of Women against Violence Act 2015', saying the bill is prepared and tabled in the Punjab Assembly without the consultation of civil society.
The NCJP on behalf of civil society pleads that 'Punjab Protection of Women against Violence Act 2015' should be reviewed to criminalize all forms of violence against women in order to shatter the culture of impunity enjoyed by male perpetrators in Punjab.
The NCJP also demand that the punishments in the bill should be prescribed as per Pakistan Penal Code to put emphasis on prevention rather than cure. The NCJP Executive Director Cecil Chaudhry said that women in and around the country have not been given due protection in the context of social or domestic violence. Various women rights coalitions, organisations and women's rights activists have presented and tabled domestic violence bill in 2014 to ensure the protection of women at home.
