Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan along with some other party's MNAs donated their 11-month salary to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital (SKMCH). Sources within PTI confirmed that the salaries had been transferred to the bank accounts of the MNAs, who boycotted parliament for about eight-and-half- months.
In a meeting with Imran Khan in the chair, the sources said that MNAs were given the option to either retain the amount or donate it to SKMCGH.
"They [MNAs] were given the option to keep the money but those who are affluent were encouraged to donate the amount to SKMCH," the sources said.
Imran Khan also suggested that those who did not want to receive the amount might return it to which the majority of PTI lawmakers said they had earned the money as they were not participating in the Dharna on a personal agenda.
Engineer Hamidullah Khalil, a PTI's MNA said their salary was their right, adding "we were on the streets for a national cause to ensure free, fair and transparent elections."
He said the formation of the Judicial Commission would go a long way in making the system transparent and PTI was the only party which waged a war against rigging due to which the status quo parties had been ruling the country for the last so many years.
He said those criticising the PTI must not forget that "we have not engaged in any corruption."
PTI sources also said that out of a total of 33 PTI MNAs in National Assembly, only four to five MNAs were expected to donate their salaries to SKMCH.
Asad Umar, Shirin Mazari and Shaqat Mehmood are expected to donate the money to SKMCH. However, the trio could not be contacted for comments despite several attempts on their cellphones till filing of this report.
