Sindh government has resorted to a blackmailing attitude on the issue of deployment and powers of rangers just to save its corruption mafia, said Pakistan Muslim League (PML) Sindh chapter president Haleem Adil Sheikh. Addressing a crowded press conference at Karachi Press Club (KPC) here on Friday, he said the prevailing peace in Karachi is due to the brave efforts of rangers, while the civil government had miserably failed to bring peace back to the mega city.
He said the Karachiites remember that the extortionists used to send gifts of bullets and grenades to the citizens and traders who did not pay them extortion money. He said they used to lob crackers on the houses in Defence Housing Authority. Sheikh said now when peace has been restored in Karachi, the provincial government of Sindh should stop to use the powers of Sindh Assembly as a weapon against the rangers. He said the rulers of Sindh want to make rangers, NAB and FIA toothless to give protection to their 'mega crocodiles of corruption. He regretted that to achieve this nefarious design the Sindh government has adopted an attitude of blackmailing. He said a conspiracy has been hatched to lower the moral of rangers who have taken glorious efforts to revive the past glory of Karachi as the city of lights and rid its citizens from target killings, kidnapping for ransom and extortion.
He said the ex-law minister of PPPP, Farooq H Naek has launched a drive against the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). He asked why Naek did not close down the NAB when he himself was the minister of law. He said we want to ask from the Federation why it was praising the role of NAB till no list was released of the people involved in cases of mega corruption. He asked why the federal government is talking about the accountability of NAB now when it has released the list of mega corruption cases and people involved in them.
Sheikh said in the year 2010 the eighteenth constitutional amendment was passed. He asked if the extensions given to rangers from 2010 to 2015 were illegal and unconstitutional. He reminded that the rangers have been here for last 26 years. He said when the rangers were not active against the corruption mafia, the Sindh government happily met their expenses and now when the rangers have tried to net the big fish of corruption mafia and get the looted money of poor Pakistanis returned it is making hue and cry. He reminded that this black money was being used to groom terrorists and fuel targeted killings and kidnapping for ransom. Now the facilitators of the terrorists, extortionists and kidnapping mafia are not happy when the rangers have launched crackdown on them, he wondered.
He said the two main political parties of Karachi have accelerated efforts to get the operation under the National Action Plan stopped and for this purpose they have targeted the rangers, NAB and FIA. He said granting the rangers extension of only one month with conditionality shows the provincial government of Sindh is well set to save its corruption mafia, and is involved to make a greater alliance against the role of rangers in Karachi.
He, however, made it clear that his party, PML, would foil this conspiracy. He said we are with the rangers in their efforts to give the city peace. We would stand shoulder by shoulder with the rangers till the last terrorist is eliminated from the city. We would launch a big campaign and efforts are afoot in this regard. Haleem Adil said the government instead of taking on the corruption mafia is trying to curtail the powers of rangers and we will not allow this to be happened. On the occasion, PML Sindh general secretary Abdul Lateef Rind, PML Larkana president Zeeshan Panhwar, Javed Awan and other leaders were present.
