The Punjab Irrigation department opened spillways of the Chashma reservoir on the mighty Indus River on Sunday to save Mianwali city and adjoining areas from the ravages of floods as the barrage has been filled to its maximum conservation level of 649 ft. According to reports, the Mianwali district administration had requested the Irrigation department to open the spillways as the river Indus is already in medium flood at up-stream Kalabagh and Chashma barrage.
The 12 July report of Flood Warning Centre concerning river inflows and flood situation said that the River Indus is medium flood at Tarbela, Kalabagh and Chashma barrage with the water flow between 312,000 cusecs and 290,000 cusecs. River Kabul is also in medium flood with the flow of 89,000 cusecs at Nowshera.
FFC report said that the river Chenab is in medium flood at Marala, Khanki, Qadirabad and Trimmu head-works.
The water flow at Trimmu head-works where river Jhelum and Chenab converge has gone up to 150,000 cusecs and a large number of villages along the rivers' bed have come under water.
The river Jhelum is also in low flood stage at Mangla with the flow of 70 cusecs of water.
According to reports, the high flood in nullah Deg with the water flow of 33,000 cusecs in Sialkot and Narowal districts has inundated 15 villages of Pasrur, 17 of Zafarwal and dozens others in Narowal district besides inundating hundreds of acres of the agriculture land.
Meanwhile scattered rain thundershower occurred in Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi /Islamabad divisions, while at isolated places in Sargodha, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Bannu Divisions and Kashmir during past 24 hours.
MET office recorded rainfall in mm as Lahore (A/P 42, City 15), Sialkot (Cantt 34, A/P 27), Murree 24, Islamabad (Golra 18, Saidpur 12, Z.P 08, and Bokra 03), Faisalabad, Gujrat 18, M.B Din, Kotli 13, Jhelum 11, Muzaffarabad 10, Gujranwala, Rawalakot 06, Khanpur, Skardu 05, Dir and Liyyah 03.
WEATHER FORECAST FOR TODAY:
Scattered rain-thundershower is expected in Kashmir, Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi/ Islamabad Hazara, Malakand, Zhob divisions, while isolated rain-thundershower is likely in Sargodha, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, D.G.Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, Peshawar, Kohat, Sibbi, Kalat, Larkana, Sukkur divisions, FATA and Gilgit-Baltistan.
