Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has instructed National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to gear up relief activities, as flash floods hit various low-lying areas in different parts of the country. According to a spokesperson for the PM House, the Prime Minister has directed the NDMA, to reinforce relief and rescue efforts in co-ordination with Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and other departments concerned.
"The Prime Minister would visit Chitral on receiving first information on weather clearance", the spokesperson said, adding he has also directed NHA to keep N-45 open so that Chitral remains linked with the national road network. Meanwhile, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif directed all field commanders of Pakistan Army for prompt and all out relief work in floods hit areas.
ISPR spokesperson said that all field commanders have been instructed to carry out effective reconnaissance of their areas and provide all possible relief to people affected by the floods. "All corps headquarters are monitoring the flood situation in their respective areas of responsibility, and have made preparations to deal with any eventuality," said the ISPR spokesperson.
The Army Chief further said that immediate relief should be provided to affected people in Chitral and other flood hit areas, besides directing the concerned Corps Commanders to keep constant vigil on flood situation in their respective areas. He asked them to be ready to cope with any situation, ISPR added. During the ongoing relief and rescue operation, the spokesperson said that Pakistan Army and Frontier Corps (FC) distributed 16 tons of rations with the help of local civil administration in the worst-hit area of Chitral district whereas army troops have rescued 73 civilians in Chitral district by dedicating two helicopters for relief and rescue operations.
According to NDMA floods updates, Indus River is in medium flood at Kalabagh, Tarbela, Attock, Taunsa and Chashma, whereas Guddu and Sukkur barrages are in low flood, as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had also instructed the authority (NDMA) to reinforce relief and rescue efforts. Meanwhile, reports say that Gilgit-Baltistan local administration has clamped emergency as the flash floods have left thousands of people homeless when water entered residential areas.
