Ride-hailing service Careem is launching a new feature in Saudi Arabia that will let blind users access the app.

Ride-hailing service Careem has collaborated with multiple blind people in order to complete the testing phase of its new feature that will facilitate blind users. The users were to share their observations and challenges in using the application.

As explained by Saudi Gazette, the feature comes in line with the accessibility feature that is consistent with the service’s mission of simplifying people’s lives for ensuring that blind people also take advantage of the firm’s services.

Available for both iOS and Android users, the new accessibility feature makes use of speech-to-text and speech-recognition feature for its visually impaired users. A text-to-speech feature reads text out loud, while a speech-recognition feature allows users to control the computer with their voice.

Co-founder and CEO of Careem KSA, Abdulla Elyas said, “We’re extremely proud to launch our new accessibility features which will support our visually impaired customers. As an AI driven organization, we want to be able to use our tech to ensure our services are accessible by all. We can now ensure that our visually impaired customers can use our services without the need to ask for help from someone else, letting them maintain their independence.”
