About 151 people lost their lives due to countrywide flash floods and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday reported 33 more deaths. The data released by the NDMA said that the devastating floods triggered by monsoon rains have killed 151 people, injured 101, affecting adversely nearly one million people in 2,276 villages with damaging 4,517 houses elsewhere in the country.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remained worst-hit area where 77 people lost their lives with 32 persons in Punjab, 22 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, 13 in Balochistan and 7 in Gilgit-Baltistan. The NDMA reported that during last 24 hours 40 more people were injured, which took the injured persons tally to 101 in flood related incidents including 48 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 33 in Balochistan, five in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and five in Gilgit-Baltistan and 10 in Punjab. About 562,350 people have been shifted to the safer places from the flood-hit areas. About 500,000 tents have been provided to the flood victims. Other relief goods include 3,304 tons of ration, 1500 tarpaulins and 8467 blankets.
The authorities have set up 641 relief camps wherein a total 67,000 people have taken shelter and 150 medical camps have also been set up for the affectees. For rescue of the people, the authorities are using 640 rescue boats, 1180 life jackets whereas 100 life rings have also been provided for the rescue of stranded people.
In response to ongoing emergency situation in district Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkwa (KP) monsoon rains have damaged public and private infra structure beside loss to precious to lives. The NDMA is extending all possible assistance to ensure provision of relief. In order to speed up and supplement relief efforts in district Chitral, the NDMA on request of PDMA KP has requisitioned two helicopters from a Government Agency. These helicopters will be directed for relief operation through the NDMA to reach out to far flung and inaccessible areas where difficulties are being faced in delivering relief assistance due to road conditions and landslides.
