Pakistan's resolve to combat extremism is shrinking space for terrorists and they are on the run in the country, Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States Jalil Abbas Jilani said here on Tuesday. Speaking at a reception he hosted for the visiting students of Army Public School, Peshawar here at the Embassy, the Ambassador paid tributes to brave Pakistani soldiers who were engaged in valiant effort to drive out the 'forces of evil'.
"While the terrorism elsewhere was on the rise across the world, the menace was declining in Pakistan, as a result of the policies and strong resolve of the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to root out extremism," the ambassador said. He paid rich tributes to the country's armed forces which he said, had borne the brunt of the fighting against terrorists and were working to secure a better and prosperous future for the country and the region.
Nearly two dozen students from the Army Public School were in the United States as part of US-Pakistan Global Leadership programme, sponsored by the Meridian Centre, a non-profit organisation that works with the US State Department and embassies world-wide to create lasting international partnership through leadership and cultural exchanges. Ambassador Stuart Holliday of the Meridian Centre said such programmes and people-to-people contact contributed to strengthening ties between Pakistan and the United States. Terrorists targeted innocent children in December last year in a blatant attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar that killed more than 140 students and teachers.
