Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmed Khan on Wednesday inaugurated a multi-million Center for Genomic Sciences at the Rehman Medical Institute (RMI), Peshawar to facilitate the investigation, research and service provision for Genetic diseases that shall cater for not only Pakistan but the surrounding region and even the world over.
Vice Chancellor Khyber Medical University Professor Dr Hafeezullah, Chairman RMI Dr Muhammad Rehman, CEO Shafiqur Rehman, Principal Dr Tariq Mufti, faculty members and a large number of health professionals were present on the occasion. This centre is one of the latest state of the art and first ever technology in Pakistan so far installed at the RMI in a bid to provide better investigative cover to genetic diseases in the country in general and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in particular.
Addressing the inaugural session of the centre Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan called upon the medical professionals, researchers and the patients to fully avail the unique opportunity offered by this Centre for Genomic Sciences. He said it was a matter of great pleasure for him to see that RMI had lived up to its promise of being the harbinger of change in the medical and academic services offered to the people of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the whole region.
He greatly commended Professor Rehman of RMI and his dedicated team in this connection and termed opening of the center for Genomic Sciences a new milestone in the research study of medical science. Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan said that the modern medicines thrive on research and its useful application for welfare of the people. He said although the country was not yet at par with the developed nations in the field of medical research, it was heartening to note the strong emphasis given to medical research at Rehman Medical College in the MBBS programme. He said the achievements of students and faculty speak themselves and he was sure those students would become excellent professionals.
The governor said the recent launch of the journal of medical students by the RMC, the first ever such publication in Pakistan for the undergraduate medical institutions was a highly appreciable milestone that shall disseminate the student research output globally. He said "as we all know the modern concept in medicine is that most diseases are rooted in a Genetic component. It is essential that doctors are empowered with the latest technology to diagnose these diseases and to do research on how best to manage cure them."
The governor said that Gene sequencing was common to all biological sciences and he expected that the facility in addition to catering to the diagnostic and research needs on humans, shall also be open for animal and agriculture fields as well. He said he was greatly encouraged by the future projects of RMI in establishing Rehman College of Dentistry, in addition to other endeavours in the field of higher education as well as healthcare. He assured his full support to make these plans mature.
The governor also urged the RMI administration to develop national and international links and collaboration of all its units so that the maximum benefits of modern medical education, research and health could be transmitted to the students, doctors and the people of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alike. Earlier, Chairman RMI Dr Muhammad Rehman presented welcome address and highlighted the achievements and future planning of the institute. He also underlined successes of the RMI students in their study of basic medical sciences. Dr Tariq Mufti and others also spoke on the occasion and affirmed their commitment to make the centre for Genomic Sciences add much to facilitate in the diagnostic procedure in genetic diseases. Later, the governor formally inaugurated. He also visited all the sections of the centre and was briefed in detail on the new methods of investigation after the advanced genetic technology was adopted in the Rehman Medical Institute.
