Former Principal of Fatima Jinnah Medical College (FJMC) Lahore Professor Dr Khalida Usmani passed away in New York after a brief illness on July 29, 2015. She was buried in Saginaw MIwhere her family members reside. She leaves behind sister, two brothers, two daughters and four granddaughters.
Professor Dr Khalida Usmani, MBBS (KE) FRCS (UK) MD (USA) was a leading breast cancer surgeon in the country. She trained hundreds of young graduate and post-graduate students during her long association with FJMC; initially as a professor of surgery and subsequently as Principal of this prestigious medical college.
During her tenure as Principal, great improvements were made in the college and hospital. New blocks were added to the girls' hostels, wards were renovated and recreational and educational activities were enhanced for the students. She was highly respected by her students and fellow academicians alike. She retired as Principal, FJMC in August 2000. In her lifetime she attained the status of an icon as a teacher, a medical scientist and a philanthropist. During government service she did not perform a single surgery in any private hospital nor charge for breast cancer or any other surgeries. She was a pioneer of awareness campaigns on breast cancer and environmental protection in Pakistan. Professor Khalida Usmani presented numerous research papers in many international conferences across the globe and received several national and international awards. She served as president of World institute of Ecology and Cancer (WIEC).
Professor Khalida Usmani dedicated her life to the service of humanity. She was the Founder and Executive Director of Cancer Research Foundation of Pakistan. She had the vision to create a modern cancer research and treatment facility for poor patients. She recently built the necessary infrastructure for the facility, but sadly, before it became operational, she passed away. Her vibrant personality leaves a big void and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
