Public mockery of religion could be banned in Rio de Janeiro under a law being considered by state legislators Wednesday with fines as high as $77,000. The bill, proposed by Rio lawmaker Fabio Silva, would outlaw public "satirising, ridiculing and/or all and any other forms of mockery or vilification dogmas and beliefs of all and any religion." Critics predict a rapid challenge in Brazil's Supreme Court if the measure passes.
