The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has succeeded in securing highest number of District Nazim seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Local bodies' elections. The PTI in 22 District Nazim elections held on Sunday in the province got nine District Nazim seats while Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) secured 4 District Nazim seats, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) three, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) two each. The Awami National Party (ANP) was able to get its candidate elected only in Swabi, according to reports.
Arbab Asim of the PTI was elected as District Nazim of Peshawar while Chief Minister KP Pervez Khattak's brother, Liaquat Khattak won District Nazim slot in Nowshehra district.
Adil Islam of the PTI also emerged successful in District Nazim election in Haripur while Atta-ur-Rehman of the same party secured the District Nazim seat in Batgram. Mustafa Kundi won from Taank, Dr Umar Daraz from Karak, Aziz Ullah Zai from D I Khan, Noor Muhammad from Tor Ghara and Fahd Khan from Charsadah on PTI tickets.
The Jamaat-i-Islami's Shehzada Faseeh Ullah won the Nazim election from Upper Dir, Maarfat Shah from Chitral, Dr Ubaid Ullah from Buner and Muhammad Rasool Khan from Lower Dir.
Muhammad Ali Shah of the PML-N became the District Nazim of Swat while Sardar Syed Ghulam and Niaz Amir Muqam got elected District Nazimeen of Mansehra and Shangla respectively on the PML-N tickets.
The JUI-F's Mufti Ubaid Ullah and Maulana Muhammad Niaz won the elections in Hangu and Kohat respectively. The PPP's Syed Ahmed Ali won the election in Malakand and Ashfaq Ahmad of the same party secured the seat from Laki Marwat. ANP's Amir Rehman also secured the District Nazim office in Swabi.
The final phase of local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) was completed on Sunday after polls for District Nazim and Naib Nazim were held in the province's 23 districts, with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leading with victories in nine districts including Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, and DI Khan.
In the provincial capital Peshawar the PTI's Arbab Asim was elected District Nazim unopposed and it also got its Nazimeen elected in three of the city's four towns. Asim's oath-taking ceremony was also conducted earlier in the day, according to reports. Disgruntled PTI member Younis Zaheer and PML-N candidate withdrew his nomination papers ahead of the polls.
In Nowshera, CM Pervez Khattak's brother, Liquat Khattak, was elected District Nazim and also bagged District Naib Nazim slot. In Charsadda, PTI's Fahad Khan was elected district Nazim, with Jamaat-i-Islami's Masood Shah as his deputy.
According to unofficial results on Radio Pakistan, Jamaat-i-Islami, which is the ruling PTI's coalition partner in the KP government, won in Chitral, Buner, Upper and Lower Dir, while the PML-N succeeded in Shangla, Mansehra and Swat.
The Pakistan People's Party was able to win in Malakand and Karak while the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl succeeded in Kohat and Lakki Marwat.
The tripartite alliance of Awami National Party, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl and Pakistan People's Party boycotted the Nazim and Naib Nazim elections in the district and three towns of Peshawar but did not boycott the elections in Town-4 of Peshawar and some other districts where the alliance had sufficient number of councillors to form governments.
