After the killing of six traffic constables in a week, the Karachi traffic police authorities have written a letter to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Hyder Jamali, requesting him to depute police and Rangers personnel for the security of traffic constables at 309 vulnerable points in different areas of the city on urgent basis.
Talking to PPI, DIG Traffic Dr Amir Ahmed said that in view of the security threats, traffic constables had been withdrawn from some of the vulnerable places. He said that the traffic police department had only 3000 constables who were regulating traffic of the whole city, which was obviously not enough.
Amir said that they had demanded from the authorities concerned to provide them enough weapons for security of traffic police, as they were given only 67 SMGs with 1500 bullets, 139 9mm pistols with 100 bullets, 243 revolvers with 3313 bullets and 300 bullet-proof jackets.
He said that the criminals would not be allowed to roam free for long, who were behind the killing of our soldiers. He further said that the traffic police needed proper training on weapons' use on urgent basis. He said that people might face traffic jam issues at points where traffic police had been withdrawn on temporary basis due to security reasons.
