The country''s protesting traders are all set to go for the third shutter-down strike today against the controversial tax on banking transactions. Traders claimed to have galvanised support within their community to show unanimity on the shutter-down strike and vowed to keep their businesses padlocked for a day to highlight their demands.
Talking to Business Recorder on Tuesday, Chairman All Karachi Tajir Ittehad, Muhammad Atiq Mir said it would be a countrywide strike to protest against government''s taxation plan. "Traders have rejected the banking transaction tax," he said.
He said that the strike day would also be a ''traders'' solidarity day'' to bring together the businessmen community together for their rights. He accused the government of unleashing a propaganda campaign to foil the strike. Traders would not file tax returns this year if the government continued with its ''unfair'' taxation policy, Atiq Mir said, adding that the banking sector had also a silent protest against the tax. "The tax has badly affected dealings between traders and banks," he added. Spokesman for Sindh Tajir Ittehad also claimed the strike would be "unanimous" across the country.
