Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmed Khan has said that the universities all over the world are playing a key role in the national development and changing the destiny of nations in accordance with the new challenges and priorities. He said the recent scenario of globalise world, establishment of knowledge based world economy and use of computerised data in almost all walks of life had further accelerated the pressing need of effective learning and transformation of results towards the comfort and ease of life.
He was addressing the 8th convocation ceremony of the University of Hazara at Mansehra on Monday. Vice Chancellor of the university Professor Dr Habib Ahmad, deans, faculty members, parents and graduating students were present on the occasion. The governor said target oriented research in the universities and their close collaboration with the industries had enhanced the GDP of the developed nations many folds, which had been unimaginable in the past. He said the Government was encouraging the talented scholars, not only for their study abroad but also by awarding indigenous scholarships to the deserving students so that they could continue their academic career without any financial hindrances.
"The Prime Minister's laptop and free reimbursement schemes" are also a part of this incentive for the talented students to get motivated and use their creative energies for achieving distinction in their respective field, he said. "I am glad to know that Hazara University is getting full benefits of the HEC schemes for sending scholars for short and long term training abroad," he said. Governor Mahtab Ahmad Khan congratulated the graduating students for embellishing their intellect with the much needed gift of higher education to make them more productive in the modern age. He said the graduates should be proud of Hazara University that was well poised to achieve marvellous milestones by producing dozens of PhDs, hundreds of MPhil scholars, thousands of graduates, hundreds of research papers, editing books, journals and inviting eminent scientists and scholars for creating awareness and keeping the students abreast with the modern stream of thought.
The governor greatly commended the efforts of Hazara University for holding the international conferences, research collaborations with national and international organisations and felicitated the administration of Hazara University for striving to achieve distinction in national and provincial ranking. He called upon all the universities to follow financial discipline and utilise their financial resources honestly.
He said strengthening of the university's infrastructure, allocating grants for its recurrent expenditure and enhancing capacity of laboratories and faculties were some of the areas in the priorities of the government. He said provision of development grants of Rs 662.179 million for the left over work of Turkish Blocks was a recent example of the commitment of the Federal Government towards universities in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He announced Rs 2 million for the beautification of the Hazara University and assured all possible support for making the Hazara University a leading model of higher education.
Earlier, the governor awarded degrees and gold medals to the graduating students. Overall 387 bachelor, master and MPhil degrees were awarded while 140 students were given gold medals. Moreover, 13 scholars were decorated with PhD degrees. Vice Chancellor of the university Professor Dr Habib Ahmad presented welcome address and threw light on the achievements and future targets of the Hazara University.
