The Sugarcane Growers Association has criticized the Kissan package announced by the federal government, claiming it is a sheer "drop in the ocean of poverty and a half-hearted attempt".
Association Convener Javed Malik said in a statement issued on Saturday, "The premier has announced interest-free loans for solar tube-wells, which is insufficient and the govt should announce at least 50-percent subsidy on these tube-wells. The quality hi-tech German solar tube well is above Rs 2 million and poor and small farmers are unable to pay even the equity to banks to get this equipment."
He also proposed that equity for farmers to obtain loans for the tube wells should never be more than 10 percent of the total amount of the loan against their agri-passbooks and termed the demand of increasing the support price as conventional. He then urged to copy the model of Indian sugarcane counterparts in Pakistan and demanded licensing and a 100-percent grant to set up sugar industries.
