This refers to a Business Recorder news item "Assad must go, but when is negotiable: Kerry" carried by the newspaper. The US Secretary of State has been quoted as saying "Syrian president Bashar al Assad must step down, but not necessarily immediately upon reaching a settlement to end the country's civil war."
Speaking after talks in London with British Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond, John Kerry has reportedly said he was prepared to negotiate to achieve a solution but asked whether Assad was.
"For the last year and a half we have said that Assad has to go but how long, what the modality is... it doesn't have to be on day one or month one, or whatever," Kerry was quoted as telling reporters.
The entire region has paid a huge price mainly for the policy blunder committed by the Obama administration in relation to the Middle East situation. Not only did Washington fail to offer an appropriate response to the events triggered by the Arab Spring in 2011, it also failed to dislodge Bashar al Assad's government in Syria. The consequences are profoundly grave. One such grave consequence is the migrant crisis as countries tussle as Europe's migrant crisis deepens.
