Islamabad High Court (IHC) has observed that the working of the Attorney General's office is "far lower than standard" and asked the concerned authorities to take remedial steps. This observation was made by IHC Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui during the hearing of a case.
During the hearing of a service matter pending for adjudication since 2013, the learned judge was informed by an officer of the Attorney General's office in May this year that the case file was not with him and this was the reason he was unable to assist the court. On June 9 when IHC again took up the matter the standing counsel again told the court that the file was still missing. In a subsequent hearing, when the court resumed hearing in this matter on June 29, the standing counsel sought time from the court to argue the matter.
In a recent order, IHC Justice Siddiqui while referring to the earlier precedence observed that "the secretariat work of Attorney General office in IHC is far lower than standard, therefore, remedial steps are required to be taken, but so far no progress has been shown." The court further observed that on most of the occasions, cases are adjourned due to lack of proper assistance by the law officers, and result in unnecessary delay in disposal of cases and this court is left with no option but to adjourn the cases.
