Rich tributes were paid to Shaheed-i-Millat Khan Liaqat Ali Khan, the first prime minister of Pakistan, ahead of the 64th anniversary of his martyrdom. In this regard, the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) organized a memorial meeting at its campus here on Wednesday. A former chief justice of the Federal Shariat Court, Justice Haziq ul Khairi, presided over.
Shedding light on the personality and achievements of Shaheed-i-Millat, he said that Liaqat Ali Khan always stressed the need of fostering unity and cohesion in order to make Pakistan strong. Justice Khairi said that after the demise of the Father of the Nation, Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, there was a gloom and dismay among the nation. At this very juncture, Liaqat Ali Khan boosted the morale of the countrymen through his inspiring speeches, he added.
Acting Vice-Chancellor of FUUAST Professor Dr Sulaiman D Muhammad said that the assassination of Liaqat Ali Khan on October 16, 1951, had created a vacuum of leadership in the country. Registrar of FUUAST, Asif Ali, DG Port and Shipping, Abdul Malik Ghauri, Azad Bin Haider, Mahfoozun Nabi Khan, journalist Agha Masood Hussain also spoke on the occasion.
A grandson of Khan Liaqat Ali Khan- Kamal Liaqat Ali Khan also attended the programme. It was also pointed out that Khan Liaqat Ali Khan had performed the inauguration of the library of the then Urdu College on September 29, 1949. This was described as a great honour for the institution.
