Sindh Advocate General (AG) Abdul Fateh Malik on Wednesday informed the Sindh High Court (SHC) that Rangers did not seek permission for the arrest of Dr Asim Hussain, former Petroleum Minister and Chairman Higher Education Sindh, from the provincial government of Sindh and his detention is unlawful. SHC bench headed by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah was hearing the petition filed by Zarin Hussain, the wife of detained Dr Asim who moved the court against detention of her spouse.
On Wednesday, AG Sindh Abdul Fateh Malik stated that Rangers did not seek permission from the government before the arrest of Dr Asim; to which the court questioned that in how many cases Rangers took permission from arresting anyone. SHC further questioned AG that what would happen to many others suspect who are being kept in detention centers by the paramilitary force? "Dr Asim is not a criminal and the Rangers have not provided any evidence against him so far and his detention is against the law," Malik submitted before the court.
The court adjourned the hearing of the case till 27th October. Dr Asim is currently in Rangers' detention for 90 days under Section 11 EEEE Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, over his alleged involvement in corruption and offences related to terrorism. The Rangers told ATC that they had credible information about Dr Asim's involvement in offences came within the ambit of Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.
