Thousands of mourners took part in the eighth Muharram procession amid stringent security across the main routes on Thursday. The major passage of the procession, M A Jinnah Road, remained under intense security watch with a heavy contingent of police and Rangers deployed on different spots to protect the participants. The city's major trade and commercial areas remained fully closed with no business activities because of the security shield, which the law enforcers have stretched deep into adjacent roads and markets.
It was the first major procession of Muharram, which started as usual from Nomaish Chowrangi under the banner of Anjuman-e-Saadat Amroha. A large number of devotees clad in black, including men, women, children, and aged attended the march that passed through M A Jinnah Road and concluded at Hussainia Irania in Kharadar.
Mourning the death of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A.), the devotees lifting black flags inscribed with religious transcriptions moved gradually and raised chants while thumbing their chests. Security remained tougher on and around the procession route. The stringent arrangements severally affected civic and commercial life in the city. There are two more major processions scheduled for the same route on ninth and tenth Muharram ie Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Rangers and police have set up several points to check vehicles and passers-by on roads leading or linking to M A Jinnah Road. Traffic remained thin, while public transport also appeared in a very few numbers. The supply of grain and other essential items has also been halted because of major markets' closure. The supply of key items including medicines will now resume from next week.
