Election Commission of Pakistan (EC) has started scrutiny of nomination papers filed by candidates intending to contest the maiden local governments elections scheduled to be held in federal capital on November 30.
An official of ECP said: "scrutiny of nomination papers filed by the candidates started on Sunday and would continue till Wednesday. As many as 10 returning offices are taking part in the exercise."
He further stated that as many as 2945 candidates filed papers for around 300 seats of the federal capital.
Capital territory is divided into local and urban areas and population of both the areas is being represented by ruling and opposition party in the national assembly. Ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N is representing rural area and Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) urban population in the Parliament with one NA seat each.
The official further stated according to schedule, appeals against acceptance or rejection of the papers can be filed on November 5-6 before the returning officers, and polling, if everything goes according to plan, would take place on November 30. The Returning Officers are scheduled to take up and decided fate of appeals on November 7-9. Those candidates, unwilling to contest the election, can withdraw their papers on November 10.
The ECP would issue final list of candidate with symbols allocated to them on November 11.
The official results of the local government elections will be notified on December 03.
Of the total 2958 nomination papers received by the ECP, for the local bodies election in Islamabad, 376 candidates have filed their nomination papers for the seats of Chairman and Vice chairman and 1502 for general member seats. As many as 401 candidates filed nomination papers for women seats, 282 for workers seats, and 282 for youth seats. Around 115 candidates have filed nomination papers for minority members.
