Criticising the media hype, a commentator on social media questioned whether the Imran Khan-Reham Khan divorce has repercussions on country's economy, foreign relations, domestic affairs and the lives of 200 million people.
It is a question. But this divorce that has taken place on the eve of local government elections in Punjab and Sindh merits the attention that it has received from a vibrant media in Pakistan mainly because of the fact that Imran is widely considered "the prime minister in waiting". Some of his critics however describe him as "the prime minister in waiting till eternity". Both Imran and former TV journalist Reham were considered political figures but of vastly different statures. No doubt Reham had been nursing ambitions to garner political space for herself under the shadow of her husband. They were no ordinary couple at all. The hype the news about them attracted was absolutely warranted and fair. Their wedding and divorce 10 months later are the events that are rightly being hyped as two of the most important news of the year in Pakistan.
