People are using social media and other options to raise their community issues as traditional print and electronic media is not giving a proper coverage to their problems. Speakers made these observations while speaking a certificate distribution ceremony of five-day training on Rise of Community Journalism held at Hyderabad Press Club the other day.
"Media is not highlighting the issues of community living in rural areas which comprise of about 70 percent of total population of the country," said Samreen Ghouri, organiser of the training program, which was funded by USAID. She said that it was a big challenge for media as people living in remote areas felt that their issues were not being raised by it and resultantly, they are finding other alternatives.
The people have already adopted new media like social media to raise their issues not only in Pakistan but also across the world, she maintained. She stressed for the need of community radio or other forms of media to raise the issues of people. The five-day training on Community Journalism was organised for students of University of Sindh, which was attended by 30 students. A student of the SU, Shoib Ahmed said that they had learnt a lot about the community journalism and production of a video on issue of the community.
