Directorate of Internal Audit (DIA) has detected massive discrepancies amounting to Rs 37.13 billion during last three years. According to a three-year performance report of the DIA, the Directorate has detected massive discrepancies amounting to Rs 37.13 billion during last three years while the recoveries on these detections stood at Rs 881.69 million. The report further stated that the tax liabilities of around Rs 9.26 billion detected by the DIA had also been admitted by the departments concerned.
Moreover, it said that recoveries affected by the field formations are 2.37 per cent of the total detections, while accepted liabilities are 24.95 per cent of the total detected amount.
The report further said that around 27.32 per cent of audit observations were converted into contravention reports. In this backdrop, it would be more appropriate to gauge the performance of Internal Audit, not merely on the basis of amount of recoveries but additionally by the amount accepted by the field formation viz-a-viz audit observations. It also said that this performance could be improved dramatically if the field formations accept the role of Internal Audit as supportive of their efforts to collect revenue for the national exchequer through pro-active and expeditious response to audit observations.
