Police on Wednesday baton charged teachers who were protesting outside the Sindh CM House for the acceptance of their demands. The protesting teachers, belonging to the interior Sindh, had staged a sit-in in front of the CM House to voice anger over non-payment of their salaries. They were chanting slogans in favour of theirs demands which also included removal of provincial secretary education.
One of the protesters claimed that police has arrested around 100 teachers. However, Sindh Education Minister Nisar Khoro later asked the police to release all those who were taken into custody.
Earlier, when the protesters were marching from Karachi Press Club (KPC) to the CM House, police in their bid to stop them from entering into the red-zone resorted to tear-gassing and fired shells in the air. According to protesters, several teachers were injured when police resorted to baton charge.
Representatives of protesting teachers said: "We have gathered here not to create any law and order situation, but to get our legitimate demands accepted in a peaceful manner. We have pens in our hands and not guns; however the Sindh government, instead of resolving our problems, is bent upon using force against us," they added.
Another protestor alleged that provincial secretary education is treating us as if we are his slaves.
Later, talking to newsmen, Nisar Khuhro said: "We don't believe in using force as we believe that peaceful protest is the democratic right of any individual.
