The Punjab-based Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has released a 'fact-sheet' about an additional cost of one billion dollars on three different parts of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, terming it "the biggest corruption scandal in the history of Pakistan". Party Organiser Chaudhary Mohammad Sarwar issuing the 'fact sheet' at his office on Thursday claimed no one could expect any good from the incumbent rulers.
He demanded parliament constitute a committee to provide oversight on financial matters associated with the mega project. Basing his claim on media reports, he said the 392-kilometre Multan-Sukkur section of the Lahore-Karachi Motorway cost was finalised at Rs 315 billion, but now this cost had been increased by Rs 56 billion in a dubious manner.
"And although the 120-kilometre Havelian-Thakot road project was finalised at Rs 95 billion, it has now increased by Rs 46 billion while the cost of allied infrastructure in the Mullah Band area of Gwadar rose thrice from Rs 835 millions to Rs 2.2 billion," he claimed. He said the cost of three projects rose by 23 percent and the cost escalation was not approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council, "but a draft was sent to its chairman who then had it approved during a public holiday." He also said his party would continue to raise its voice against corruption and expose the corrupt in the country.
